Spotlight - Julie Hewett Los Angeles

Being a professional makeup artist regardless of the venue you choose to work in (i.e., television, film, photography) requires total commitment, but deciding to also manufacturer your own product line and still be on set daily can be as challenging as climbing Mount Everest!

This Pro has known several MUAs that tried to develop their own professional line to only have it fail because they could not afford the advertising, public relations, packaging, testing, FDA approval, etc., and I know a few artists who have gone the route of consultant to major cosmetic companies, as well as continue to apply makeup to a list of celebrity clients.

Alas there are only a few artists that have climbed the beauty product-manufacturing hill and made it to the top. Those people are some of the most talented artists of our time and if you were a smart consumer you would use their cosmetic lines daily because those are the products that truly work and they have been put to every test you can imagine.

Those foundations, powders, lipsticks, liners, blushers, mascaras, etc., have been used on film and television stars and on everyone in between; family, friends, total strangers and the artists themselves personally. They are the secret weapons of many beauty editors and other MUA colleagues because the products do exactly what the creator intended for them to do.

These lines are little in comparison to big name brands like L’Oreal, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Dior or Chanel and sometimes they are not as easy to purchase because they are sold via the Internet. Since we seem to be a instant gratification society, waiting for a package containing the world’s greatest lipstick is too much for us to handle – unless you are a true beauty junkie and you know that the product is worth the wait!

When this Pro wants to feel and look my best personally, I reach for products that are made by other makeup artists, not big manufacturers. One of the product lines I love is Julie Hewett Los Angeles. This line is creative, paired down and designed by one of the best film artists working today.

She developed her line out of necessity while on the set of the film Pearl Harbor. Julie needed to create her own line of long-lasting Technicolor red lipsticks because of the period of time the film was recreating. Do you remember the gorgeous lip colors from the 1940’s? Now try to find those colors made with today’s natural ingredients. Impossible? No! Julie Hewett created classic film noir colors, which are ageless, timeless and for every woman who thought they could never wear red lipstick, this is the line for you!

The success of the lipstick line leads her to continue to manufacturer other products that performed to makeup artist standards. Now with a complete cosmetic line sold in stores around the world from California to Singapore, consumers can experience the luxury of Julie Hewett.

Here are a few of my Pro favorites:

Icon of Beauty – in Annette – it is a classic matte mauve lipstick with a hint of brown. This is an amazing long-lasting lip color that makes me feel instantly glamorous when paired with a pale eye and liquid liner.

Omit – a concealer pencil you can use to “omit” any flaw on your face, this Pro also uses it to line around the lips to make liner and lip color last longer and not bleed. It is my "secret" weapon! I have also used it to line the inside of the waterline instead of using a white liner.

Cheekie - in Peachie, Rosie and Natural - when this Pro wants to add a sheer wash of color onto a client's cheek and lips I reach for a Julie Hewett Cheekie! This product adds just the right amount of color onto the skin without looking heavy leaving a gorgeous, natural flush to the face!

Cheekie & Shimmy Duo – in Peachie/Goldie and Jami/Pinkie – this is my secret weapon for bringing a pop of color to the cheeks and creating a fresh glow on the skin! Used with the Chubby Cheekie Brush that makes applying the exact hint of color possible and not over do it!

Palettes – in Soiree, Ambre and Mandy – this Pro is all about palettes! My test of a great palette is when I have used every single color contained in the palette and not just one or two. That is why I love Julie Hewett’s palette line and she has made it possible for customers to create their own personal palette. Julie also has a Twilight Palette for those who wish to embrace their inner vampire a la team Bella and Edward!

As far as in my professional kit – Julie’s red lipsticks are my go to product. Rouge Noir, Sin Noir, Nude Noir, Film Noir, Oona Noir (a 2009 Emmy favorite) are what I grab when I am looking to recreate total glam on a client and I mix a few of these reds together to create a custom shade!

I trust Julie Hewett’s line because of her own professional experience working with such award-winning actresses as; Annette Bening, Jodie Foster, Nicole Kidman, Hilary Swank, Debra Messing and Liv Tyler. Her film credits include; The Women, Leatherheads, Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen, Spider-Man 2, American Beauty and Pearl Harbor to name just a few. Her cosmetic line delivers every single time I use it and it makes me feel confident as an artist and a consumer.

Hollywood big wigs have trusted in Julie Hewett’s cosmetic line and artistry skills for the past 20 years and now you can too! To purchase Julie Hewett product log on to www.juliehewett.net, enter the site and click on "locations" to find a retail store nearest you or to purchase directly on line.

Tres, Tres Chic & Magnifique!

Sometimes a professional makeup artist lives a glamorous life and gets to travel outside of the confines of the makeup room or trailer to a world more incredible than the one he or she has left behind.

Most individuals think that the career of a Pro MUA is nothing but a jet-setting, couture-wearing, snob-inducing lifestyle filled with indulgences and perks only “common” folk could dream of, but alas, I am here to burst that overly exaggerated and completely false image in your head and bring you back to reality.

Life inside a makeup room or trailer is fun, full of laughter and creativity, but please understand that working as a makeup artist in film, television or photography is nothing short of…WORK!  Hours and hours of work!  Early morning “call times” and late night “last looks” can leave this Pro feeling less than glamorous.

Remember, it is the model, actress or actor that receive all those “favors” from designers, makeup lines, skincare gurus and hairstyle experts.  This Pro is simply a piece of a very fine-tuned puzzle creating the smoke and mirrors that sell magazines or movie tickets!  I won’t fool you…I do reap some benefits, but not the kind that many readers may think!

Please don’t consider for a minute that this Pro is cursing the career I have chosen for the past 20 years (has it really been that long?).  It is the only job I have ever had and would never trade for all the Prada in the world, but it can be stressful, time consuming and sometimes I shoot in the most “unglamorous” locations you could ever imagine (like the State Prison)!

Recently, my MUA Fairy Godmother answered my prayers and blessed me with a very tres, tres chic makeup job, which would take me to the most fashionable and enchanting city in the world…Paris!

Faster than sweeping Chanel Lipstick on Giselle, I was packed and on a plane bound for France with a smile on my face and plenty of Evian spritz for the 12-hour flight (not to mention many, many more skin reviving serums).

Paris is filled with women who can only be described in one word…magnifique!  They ride bikes in 4-inch Christian Louboutins, they eat baguettes, they smoke, they drink, and they always, always look incredible!  They are fabulous and their skin is amazingly flawless!  How do they do it?

Mingling amongst the people of Paris I learned a few secrets…the French live life to the fullest everyday, they worship experiences more than money and they spend their hard-earned dollars on top-notch products!  Quality over quantity is their motto!

I started to think about all of the incredible French skincare and makeup lines and thought it was time to start adapting a more Parisian lifestyle.  During my time off from the set, I wondered the streets of Paris and photographed the people and places this city has birthed.  I ventured into boutiques that carried expensive concoctions that tickled my senses and revived my tired skin!

I started with a brand called Talika, which was given to me by a very generous person who heads-up the companies PR both in the United States and Europe.  In researching this product line I discovered that this brand was created in 1948 by doctor Danielle Roches, in the ophthalmologic department of the famous Paris hospital, Hopitaux de Paris.  She began her career by developing an antibacterial cream with plant extracts that help cure individuals suffering from dramatic face and eye burns due to war casualties.

I was given several products for the eye area and nails including: Eye Detox Contour Gel, Eye Dream, Eye Therapy Patches and Nail Regenerator Serum.  The first thing I noticed about this product line is the packaging.  Parisian skincare and makeup packaging feels different when you hold it in your hands.  It is weightier, classic in design, sturdy and very appealing to the eye.  It is not “flashy” or over exaggerated.

Eye Dream was the first product I tried because my skin was more than dehydrated from the travel, lack of sleep and airplane food (even though I put a ton of care into my skin) and because I completely agree with the information found on the Talika website quoting, “sleep is often considered an underrated and ignored wellness necessity of life!”

Also, “sleep is the body in recovery mode, during sleep the delicate skin around the eyes loses up to 50% of its moisture and is most biologically receptive to external hydration and nourishing ingredients.”  Eye Dream provides that renewal and it is a short-term eye treatment.  To quote, “Eye Dream transforms bedtime into an 8-hour long spa treatment for the eyes!”  I couldn’t rip opening the packaging fast enough!

I am still in the process of using the Eye Dream treatment (on day 10 of the recommended 28 days) but I am noticing a decrease in my deep wrinkles and the elasticity of my skin seems to be improving.  I can’t wait to also try the Eye Detox Contour Gel, which claims to fade the appearance of bags and dark circles and the Eye Therapy Patches, which is also supposed to reduce dark circles, wrinkles, puffiness and scars.

As far as the Nail Regenerator Serum also by Talika, if you are anything like me, your nails get dry and brittle during travel and in the summer time.  This product has been a lifesaver!  It has rejuvenated and hydrated my nails and cuticles.  This Pro highly recommends this product and I will continue to use this treatment throughout the summer months.  Plus I plan on purchasing another tube during the severely dry winter season in order to ensure that my nails will stay nourished!

If you are an avid reader of IMPO then you know that this Pro carries a variety of makeup lines in my kit, but I have a few products that I use time and time again because of pigmentation, wear-ability, blend-ability and stamina.  One of those go-to lines is IL-Makiage, which is a French cosmetic company with an extensive product display specializing in every color of the rainbow!

When I need to match the colors in a peacock’s feather, the blue of the Caribbean ocean or the exact red of Santa Claus’ suit, I turn to IL-Makiage because I know that this product will provide me with amazing hues and top-of-the-line quality.

I discovered IL-Makiage during research for a photo shoot many moons ago and it has been a “staple” in my kit ever since.  Ilana Harkavi is the beauty behind this cosmetics line and it has been deemed the “makeup artist’s makeup line!”

With over 500 shades, all-in-one products to simplify application and textures that make any high-fashion photo shoot a breeze; this product line is also priced competively with other American-brands.  IL-Makiage will be celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2012 and Ilana is known for sharing her makeup secrets with some of today’s most sought after artists, including Bobbi Brown and Dick Page.

There are many other French designed makeup lines that have this Pro’s seal of approval namely Dior, Nars and Avene.  If there is one thing I have discovered over the past 20 years as a Pro MUA, it is that I don’t need to stock my kit with tons of makeup and skincare in order to give a model, actress or actor a flawless look, but I do need product that will perform in front of the camera just as much as the person wearing it will give a quality performance!

PRO TIPS AND TRICKS:

Money is always a big issue and today it seems as if it is bigger than ever before, my tips and tricks for this particular post is to encourage our readers to spend their money wisely and purchase quality product regardless where it is manufactured.  Do your research and choose skincare and makeup that will treat and enhance your face.  Take good care of your skin and it will reward you for many years to come!

Mineral Maven!

In the television, film and theatre industry, lighting plays a key role in how makeup translates on the big or little screen and live from the stage. Pro makeup artists use a ton of different foundations, contours, highlights and pigments on the skin in order to project color through the camera lens because the intensity of the lighting can make everyday makeup disappear.

Not a week goes by that I don’t get a request from an actress or actor in a pre-production meeting asking me to use mineral cosmetics and my reply is the same every time, “I have researched several mineral brands and have not found a product line that has enough pigment to read on camera correctly!” But, I kept on researching and finally I have found a mineral cosmetic that has great pigmentation and coverage.

Purely Cosmetics is the best mineral line I have ever used and I was not a believer in any form of mineral cosmetics before I started using this product. Robyn Bloom is the beauty and the brain behind this brand, which she started 10 years ago after she lost her “day” job due to back issues.

Her girlfriend had sent her a Bare Minerals Kit for Christmas and Robyn loved the way the mineral products applied quickly and easily and how it felt as if you didn’t have any makeup on your skin. However, what she didn’t like was the fact that most of the eye shadows and cheek colors had so much glitter in them, that they actually accentuated the “bags” under her eyes instead of hiding them!

She decided to research what it would take to start her own line and because her background was in science, she found websites where she could buy raw materials in small quantities and started playing around with the ingredients.

She discovered that there were several harmful elements in most of the mineral cosmetic lines available to the consumer. Robyn was able to remove those harsh components from her line and fill a void for the more mature woman by removing the major sparkle and providing matte or slight shimmer colors.

Let’s get educated on harmful ingredients, shall we…

Bismuth Oxychloride is a major ingredient in most mineral products and it is a skin irritant for many, so Robyn formulated a her product line to be free from this mineral. Also, Purely Cosmetics do not contain talc, cornstarch or preservatives and there are no micronized ingredients, which are easily inhaled and can be troublesome for asthmatics or individuals suffering from respiratory problems.

WebMD says, “Bismuth is a byproduct of lead and copper processing, even though it is a mineral, it’s not found in the earth.” Basically, if you wear a mineral makeup, I would run and check the ingredients list of your current product and toss it in the garbage if it contains Bismuth!

This product line is ideal for sensitive skin or those with acne, rosacea or eczema and the zinc oxides and titanium oxides in the product act as natural sunscreen without clogging pores. It will give the skin a natural looking luminosity and provides even coverage with a lightweight feel.

In fact, if you log on to the Purely Cosmetics’ website you will find that this line was compared in terms of ingredients, size, price and cost per gram of product against many other popular mineral lines, including Bare Escentuals, GLO Minerals, Sheer Cover, Youngblood, Arbonne and Pur Minerals to name just a few. Check out how Purely Cosmetics “stacked” up to those considered the “best” by clicking here!

Robyn was kind enough to send this Pro a bunch of products to experiment with under television lighting during a recent HD shoot and I was incredibly surprised by the pigmentation and coverage provided by the foundation, eye shadow and blush colors.

Here is the beauty breakdown:

I started by prepping my actress’ skin with eye cream and moisturizer, letting it absorb into the skin while the hairstylist worked on her hair.

Upon her return to my makeup chair, I applied Purely Cosmetics’ Silk & Pearl Powder Primer to the entire face and began mixing together two Foundation colors; Calif Blonde (light) and Neutral Light. I did break out my Eve Pearl Concealer Trio prior and covered a few deep scars and very dark circles that would “read” on HD harshly.

Next, I applied Dior Bronzer in Honey Matte as a contour (not because I didn’t like Purely Cosmetics’ Bronzer, but only because Robyn didn’t send me a sample – hint, hint if you are reading this Robyn!!!). However, she did send me the most gorgeous blush color called Blushing that provided my actress with the most naturally radiant warm “flush” tone on her face.

I set the face with the Pure Silk Powder and moved on to my actress’ eyes. Choosing 4 shades from the “haul” of color so generously bestowed upon me; Cappuccino (for lid), Dark Brown Matte (for crease), Matte Mauve (for corner of eye) and Nearly Nude (for brow bone). I lined the eyes with Pruely Cosmetics’ Cream to Powder eye shadow in Dark Brown on the top and bottom lash lines. Mascara was my trusted drug store CoverGirl Lash Blast and lips were lined with a natural tone liner and M.A.C. Twig Lipstick.

Now, the time came for my actress to take her “mark” on camera and as we entered the sound stage, I was holding my breath in hopes that this product line would not let me down! I stared into the monitor, crossing my fingers with my left hand and my right hand firmly gripping my “actor” bag containing “back up“ product I could use to quickly cover up the mineral makeup, but guess what? I did not need that “other” makeup; Purely Cosmetics was incredible on camera.

Flash forward to the next morning and I thought, “hey, if my actress looked amazing yesterday, I should try Purely Cosmetics on my skin!” I marched downstairs and grabbed the product from my makeup kit and started to go to work! I am over 40 and have dry skin with an oily t-zone. I absolutely loved how this mineral line covered up my skin issues and diminished my fine lines and wrinkles!

I am a cream foundation girl, but Purely Cosmetics will be in my personal and professional makeup kit from now forward as an alternative to my traditional products! The eye shadow and blush pigments are lovely and a matte finish is my personal choice with a slight shimmer, which diffuses light off my brow bone and cheek area (which I feel makes me look younger)!

Got Teenagers? Me too! Once I was thoroughly schooled on the ingredients in and performance of this mineral line, I sprinted into my teenage daughter’s bathroom, ripped open their cosmetic bags and dumped all the other brands of mineral cosmetics I had purchased for my girls onto the floor and began reading the ingredients. Let’s just say, I was disgusted by what I found and promptly trashed at least $100 worth of cosmetics, but they will be replaced with Purely’s line very soon!

You can imagine how much my girls love makeup and are always asking to “borrow” something I am using, but I make sure that they understand not only how to take care of their skin, but what it means to wear cosmetics, how to apply them properly and how to remove them so as not to damage that genetically gorgeous skin they have been blessed to have been given.

I highly recommend this mineral line and have not found another that was able to live up to my high expectations as a mom and professional makeup artist! Thanks Robyn for creating a wonderful alternative for the consumer!

Purely Cosmetics can be purchased online at www.purelycosmetics.com and here is another bonus, if you have a question, guess who will respond? Robyn herself – how’s that for customer service!

PRO TIPS & TRICKS:
Check out these great ideas from Purely Cosmetics; their products are so pure and so versatile that you can mix them with clear nail polish and create your very own color! Also, mix with your favorite clear lip balm and create your own personal lipstick color! Mix the foundation with one or two drops of moisturizer for a creamy base for extra dry skin. Wet it and use as an eyeliner!

Crème de la Crème!

The history of makeup dates back to 3500 BC when usage by the 1st Dynasty of Egypt decided that decorating a person’s eyes, cheeks and lips was consider a statement of royalty. Later, the Roman philosopher Plautus wrote, “A woman without paint is like food without salt.” However, by the 1800s makeup was mainly worn by prostitutes and Queen Victoria declared to the public that makeup was improper, vulgar and unacceptable (unless you were an actor - then it was mandatory). Whew!

Well, today’s cosmetic industry is estimated at $19 billion! That is how much we spend on making ourselves “lovely!” We have come a long way since ladies “pinched” their cheeks to look youthful and we are given a wide variety of makeup choices. Liquids, powders, gels or crèmes that come in compacts, jars and tubes are all at our fingertips! All we have to do is decide on color, texture, ingredients, smell and sometimes, taste!

Rouge (which is French for Red) or as we say in more modern times, Blush is a cosmetic that women have used for centuries and in some cases men too! Ages ago people would crush mulberries, strawberries or use red beet juice to stain their lips and cheeks. It is so much easier to stroll casually into Sephora, Nordstrom, Neiman’s or the everyday drug store and purchase something sparkly, glittery, matte or shimmery. It’s so emotional, it’s so personal and it’s so necessary!

This Pro is a lover of crème blushers and eye shadows! With summer just around the corner, I will be switching to my favorite crème de la crème mainly because that when I am not on set, I plan on spending many hours at the pool, beach and river and I want to look my best without worrying about if makeup is running down my face. Plus, how many women do you see checking their faces in the mirror or primping at the beach? I hope you are going to say “none!”

Crème shadows and blusher require very little touch up and some formulas are sweat-proof, crease-proof and water-resistant. Plus, they are great for women (like me) that have more mature and/or dry skin.

We all know that adding blush to your face is the quickest skin pick-me-up and it is essential for a fresh look. Applying a crème blush should be the first makeup you put on your face either on its own or after your foundation and concealer.

Let’s start by choosing a crème blush shade perfect for your skin tone by using this helpful guide:

Fair skin – peach or pink

Medium skin – coral or rose

Dark skin – bold, bright shades

As for crème eye shadows, refer to this guideline:

In your 20’s – anything goes – glitter, shimmer, pearly
In your 30’s – sophisticated with a shimmer (glitter should be used sparingly).
In your 40’s – matte colors with a slight hint of shimmer (no glitter)
In your 50’s or over – matte colors

If you are going for an everyday look or you want to add a little color to your face while sunning at the pool or beach, crème blush and shadow are best when kept neutral and natural. In other words, save the Aqua blue shadow and bright pink blush for those hot disco nights a la Miami Beach!

Here is the quick how-to:

1. Apply skin care accoutrement (serum, moisturizer, eye crème, primer) and let soak into the skin for 10 minutes.

2. Apply full-face or spot apply foundation, tinted moisturizer and/or concealer. DO NOT SET WITH POWDER (crème products on top of powder is a big makeup NO, NO!!!).

3. Using fingertips or a taklon brush with round tip (like a foundation brush) – apply crème blush lightly and gently “stipple” or “pat” color to apples of cheeks. Build on the color if needed. Do not “sweep” crème blush onto cheeks and don’t rub into the skin (unless you are going for the slapped in the face look).

4. Choose two shades of crème eye shadow – medium tone for lid and lighter tone for brow bone. Again, use fingertips to apply by lightly tapping onto eye area and blending or use taklon brushes. Pro tip: lip brushes work well to apply color to lid area (they are the perfect shape and are small enough to get into the corner of your eyes).

5. Waterproof mascara in black coating upper lashes twice.

6. Set makeup with a light dusting of translucent powder.

7. Lipgloss in a gorgeous shade of your choice.

Voila! You are ready to hit the seashore or other outdoor activity! You can also choose to line your upper lash line with a waterproof liquid liner in a dark chocolate brown (black liner can be a little harsh with this look).

Now here is the how-to bumped up a notch:

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 from above.

3. Apply crème blush using fingertips or brush to apples of cheeks. Apply crème highlight color in a champagne shade to cheek under eye area (where the light would naturally hit). Pro tip: if you are unable to find a champagne tone in a crème blush form then use the crème eye shadow in the same hue!

4. Apply metallic crème shadow in grey and charcoal hues to lid and crease area using fingertips or small taklon brush, creating a smoky eye. Take champagne color shadow and use on brow bone. Apply charcoal color under bottom lash line and smudge.

5. Line eyes with waterproof, liquid liner in black and smudge into upper lash line.

6. Waterproof mascara in black coating upper lashes thrice and lower lashes once for definition.

7. Set with a light dusting of translucent powder.

8. Gloss lips with a gorgeous nude pinky tone.

Voila again! You are ready for a night out on the town (and you can rest assure that your makeup will last longer than your feet will in those Louboutin stilletos)!

Here is a list of this Pro’s personal crème blush and shadow favorites:

Becca – this tint has such rich pigment that it is perfect for any complexion. Super blendable and leaves an effortless, natural-looking finish to cheeks. Packed with anti-oxidant vitamin E and it is both preservative and paraben-free. Favorite colors: Turkish Rose, Hyacinth, Amaryllis, Dahlia and Terracotta.

Kevyn Aucoin The Creamy Moist Glow – this blush creates a sheer wash of color on the cheeks for a radiant, youthful vitality to the skin. Adds a healthy glow or slight flush. Pro picks: Bliss (rosy pink), Tansoleil (sheer apricot) and Nuelle (soft peachy nude).

Nars The Multiple – this product is an all-in-one, multi-purpose makeup stick. This product will highlight, sculpt, warm eyes, cheeks, lips and body! Talk about your one-stop shop and big bang for your buck! This Pro’s must have colors: Orgasm (peachy, pink shimmer), Malibu (pinkish brown), Riviera (sheer pink), Portofino (shimmering coral), South Beach (shimmering apricot) and St. Barts (taupe shimmer).

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner – guaranteed to make you gorgeous as you shade and line your peepers! Total multi-tasking product that will contour and highlight your eyes for a sheer or dramatic look. Smudge-proof, crease-proof formula. The Lana are light neutral shades, The Gabbi are medium neutral shades and The Betty are deep neutral shades. My favorites: The Lana in Birthday Suit (brushed chrome), Bunny Hop (pale pink), R.S.V.P. (champagne) – The Gabbi in Get Figgy (frosted heather) and Skinny Jeans (pewter) – The Betty in Busy Signal (brown) and Strut (smoky denim).

Shu Uemura Cream Eye Shadow – this is a very soft, blendable, waterproof eye shadow that provides an intense color payoff! Non-creasing formula with high-impact results. Use to create a refined, natural look or a dramatic nighttime eye! Pro can’t live withouts: M Black (matte jet black), M Sand Brown (matte taupe beige), P Taupe (pearly silver) and if you really want to have some fun, try P Light Blue (pearly icy pale blue), P Light Green (light yellow green) or P Pink (light neutral pink).

PRO TIPS & TRICKS:
Are you in love with a vibrant shade of crème shadow or blush, but just can’t see wearing it on your eyes or cheeks because of the intensity? Try wearing it on your lips! Apply a lip balm first as a base and to cut color pigmentation, apply color and last, apply a clear, shiny lipgloss!
