-- fat thighs and happiness

My personalized Google homepage includes a daily quote. I think this is true:
Happiness is always a by-product. It is probably a matter of temperament, and for anything I know it may be glandular. But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness.
- Robertson Davies
Whatever your lot is in life, try to appreciate what you can. I was talking about this with a friend. For most of her life she hated her legs thinking they were too fat (honestly, is there a woman alive who doesn't feel this way?). But you know, those legs, even if pudgy by anorexic People magazine standards, carry us around faithfully anyway. Not grudgingly, even with the blows of self-hate raining down on them -- they still function, those reliable workhorses. You know any employees who would labor under those conditions? They'd tip out the door! So one of my New Year's resolutions is to spend more time appreciating what I have rather than long for what I don't.

Oh and I'd like to trim up my thighs.*
*But I'll just pluck away at that, recognizing it takes time and patience. My next post will be about diet & exercise, stay tuned.
