Malibu Barbie!

When this Pro was a little girl I wanted to be just like Malibu Barbie!  Drive a convertible corvette, live in a dream house, wear a skimpy bikini, be a bleach blonde and have an amazing, year-round tan!

As I grew older I achieved my goal because being born and raised in Southern California and spending my weekends at the beach was as easy as hopping on the bus or bumming a ride from friends.

Back in those carefree days we never used sunscreen, in fact this Pro is not sure I even knew what the word sunscreen meant.  I slathered on baby oil! I had so many freckles on my nose every summer and my poor skin would burn first, then peel and finally tan.  Little did I know, or even care back then, that my skin was on its way to resembling beef jerky!

It has only been within the last 15 years that I have become serious about protecting my skin from cancer and damaging UV rays.  I still live in SoCal and work a ton on outside location shoots.  I don’t care anymore about being Malibu Barbie or driving a convertible corvette.  I live in an over priced, suburban dream house and I am not skinny enough to wear a skimpy bikini!  My checking account won’t allow me to pay insane prices for bleach blonde hair, but I still care about having an amazing, year-round tan, only now I achieve my goal with the help of self-tanners.  I guess I am officially Fake and Bake Barbie!

I have tried several self-tanners and have been extremely disappointed with the Oompa Loompa orange color my skin turns hours after application.  I don’t know about you, but I like to look like I have a “normal” tan that appears to be a few shades darker then my natural skin tone.

I laugh at those people who have orange tints to their skin and think how impossible it must be to find a foundation to match that incredibly fake hue! Sorry Christina, but that "natural" glow is so hideous!

Recently, I have also discovered a fondness for the spray tan.  I mean a real spray tan, not from the aerosol can at the drug store, but from a professional, certified, spray tan technician who applies in the privacy of my own home!  In fact, IMPO Pro, Cathi Singh is one of the best spray tan techs in the biz and recently began to tan several clients on a regular basis both on and off the set.

Celebrities do it, models do it, and a lot of men do it too! Spray tanning has become the wave of the future for sun worshipers who crave that tan all year long. Only this method is completely safe, UVA and UVB free, and won’t leave you with years of sun damage!

It works by spraying a bronzing agent onto the skin using a high volume air machine. The main ingredient that actually colors your skin is called Dihydroxyacetone, or DHA. The DHA soaks into the upper layers of the skin and reacts with the skin proteins and amino acids forming brown colored compounds. And voila, you have achieved a perfectly even (streak free) tan without sweatin’ it out in the harsh sun’s rays for 4 hours.

Spray tans take about 10 minutes to apply for preparation and spraying. Cathi personally uses a 99% alcohol free natural product on her clients and has never had anyone turn Oompa Loompa orange or have streaks and uneven lines. She uses the product on herself and loves the believable tan she can achieve, even on extremely fair skin.

Because spray tanning is becoming much more popular and accessible, it is extremely important that you research your tan technician! Ask the following questions:

* Are they certified?
* Trained?
* What products do they use?
* Are they mobile and does it cost extra to come to your home?

If you have allergy-sensitive skin like Cathi and I, ask about the products they carry.  Cathi has several different levels of DHA formulas, all with a high level of Aloe Vera to moisturize the skin, which helps maintain an even and long lasting tan. It also contains SPF 15, however, a spray tan is not to be considered sun protection. A daily sunscreen is recommended.

Some spray tan formulas have evolved and are infused with the newest powerful Anti-Aging complex, Matrixyl 3000, which has been hailed as “the new Botox” without the needle, but we have not been able to test out those formulas yet!

If you are having a professional spray tan for an up coming special event, work-related need, exotic vacation or maybe you just want to have a healthy glow daily, here are some important steps to extend the life of your tan:

* Moisturize! Keeping those upper layers of skin from drying out and sluffing off is the only way to keep your tan even and golden for up to 10 days. Cathi personally loves and recommends the convenience of a spray moisturizer, because it’s fast and gives a healthy sheen in seconds. Moist Air Hydration Treatment has the most delicious tropical scent and is easy to travel with. Spray it over a fresh spray tan for a gorgeous radiant glow!

* Exfoliate before your tan, not after! Once your tan has set in, only shower and moisturize with smooth lotions, nothing abrasive that could jeopardize the life of your tan.

* Spending long periods of time in jacuzzis and pools will lighten your tan, so try and stay dry for the first few days.

For more information on ingredients, products, and how to care for your tan, visit www.tampabaytan.com and if you would like to hire Cathi as your spray tan technician contact her directly at cathi.singh@gmail.com.

If you are more of a DIY kinda guy or gal, then we recommend a few of the following over the counter self-tanning products:

Somerville360 - Tanning Towelette Face and Body - this product is wonderful and so easy to use!  Each towelette is concentrated with a paraben-free self-tanning formula that will give you a quick and even application with no streaking.  A natural glow takes about 2 to 4 hours to appear and for a deeper tan or to maintain your glow, reapply as needed.

Clinique Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion - this product comes in a tube for the face or for the body.  It is a tinted lotion that gives you instant color.  No surprise unblended streaks because it shows where it goes.  Looks smooth, even and a golden tan will develop in a few hours.  Reapply as needed.

St. Tropez - this self tanner is HUGE in Hollywood, in the music business and on the runways!  It is a salon-inspired formula that was specially created to give you the richest, deepest tan.  This product is infused with aloe vera and long lasting color.  It is also packed with Aromaguard fragrance technology, which eliminates the tell-tall self tan aroma by 70%.

Bella Bronze Body Bronzer - creamy rich, easy to blend, packed with moisturizers!  Gives you a deep-dark, streakless, sun-free tan within 2-3 hours.  Ingredients include Golden Chamomile, Virgin Olive Oil, Shea Butter, Goats Milk and Fig extracts.

Pro Do's and Dont's:

Do: exfoliate both your face and body prior to using self-tanning products or spray tans.  It will help expel dry, dead skin cells and prep the skin to receive the self-tanning product for optimal results.

Do: remember that self-tanners and spray tanning are not an alternative for sunscreen and you should continue use your normal sunscreen protection everyday.

Don’t: forget to read the instructions before applying a self-tanning product.

Do: Heed the drying time instructed before putting on your clothes.

Do: wash your hands immediately after application!

Pro Tips and Tricks:

One more thing before we go...for those of you who still love to tan the old fashion way and find that you have spent too much time in the sun...by this we mean, you skipped the golden tan and headed straight for lobster red, don't fret, we have found the cure-all product!

Kiehls' Centella Recovery Skin Salve - contains Tiger Herb, which gains its namesake from the wild, where tigers rub their wounds against it because of its natural healing properties.  It also has antibacterial and anti-psoriatic ingredients and will aid in many skin problems besides a sunburn such as hives and insect bites.  The insanely good looking bald man who sold this product to us said he uses it on his scalp if he burns because it takes away the tight skin pain, inflammation and prevents peeling.

Favorite Things!

As professionals in the beauty industry and ever since starting this blog, IMPO receives a ton of email asking us to let our readers know what skincare, makeup and personal care items are really in our bathrooms! What do the Pros personally use daily? What are our “go to” products?

So, we decided to channel our inner Oprah and comprise a list of “The Pro’s Favorite Things." Unfortunately, the “plugs” we will be providing to many beauty manufacturers out there will not reap the benefit of a swag (stuff we all get) bag for our readers! Sorry folks!

Hey, maybe someday IMPO will be as big as Oprah and our Fans, Followers and Readers could receive care packages like Oprah audience members do during the taping of her “Favorite Things” segments…a blog’s gotta dream y’all!

Now, putting together this post was not easy and it made the Pros really think about which products we “must have” daily and can’t live without ever, the kind of products that you have to take with you when you travel because you just can’t feel confident without them.

If you read IMPO regularly you are aware of the cosmetics and skincare lines that the makeup Pro uses professionally on her clients, but our readers ask, “do you also use those products on yourself?” and, “do professional products really cross the line over into everyday wear?”

The answer to those questions is a very simple…yes. Some products make the leap and others are manufactured specifically for television, film and photography.

To recap…here is a partial list of cosmetic products inside the makeup Pro’s kit: Nars, Dior, Eve Pearl, Smashbox, M.A.C., Tricia Sawyer Beauty, Three Custom Color, The Lipstick Queen, Bobbi Brown, Jan Marini and La Mer, all of which are consumer friendly beauty products found at major department stores and retailers or online. They work just as well “on” camera as “off” camera for her clients.

The makeup Pro’s kit also contains products found at industry specialty retailers such as Cinema Secrets, Naimes, Frends and Alcone, which work in both the professional makeup industry and for everyday wear. Please check the IMPO blog archive or use the “search” button at the top if you are curious about a particular product line.

It is also important to make clear to our readers that the Pros of IMPO do not “rep” or sell any particular beauty line. We do receive products to test personally and professionally and some we review and others we do not! Just like Bobby Brown: that’s our prerogative!

But, what you really want to know is which beauty care and makeup lines are in our shower, makeup bag and medicine cabinets and it may surprise you to read that as Pros in the beauty industry (and sisters in real life), we have different styles when it comes to our personal routines, so without further ado…

SKINCARE:

The makeup Pro is a firm believer in the Jan Marini Skincare line of products. With 42 creeping up on her door step, she felt it was time to start fighting back the signs of aging skin and the Jan Marini line came to her rescue! Starting with the BioGlycoloic Facial Cleanser both morning and night to cleanse and to remove makeup and bacteria. C-ESTA Serum, Age Intervention Peptide Extreme, Age Intervention Enlighten, Age Intervention Face Cream and Eye Cream. Twice a week she also uses Age Intervention Regeneration Facial Mask. Also used daily is the Jan Marini AntiOxidant Daily Face Protectant sunscreen.

The makeup Pro recently discovered the Talika skincare treatment line and has been using the Eye Dream product at night (on day 15 of the 28 day treatment) in conjunction with Jan Marini products, which has helped rejuvenate her over traveled, delicate skin around her eye area.

The marketing Pro is using Jurlique Balancing Foaming Cleanser once a day (in the shower!) followed by a spritz of Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist and Jurlique Sun Lotion with SPF30+. In the evening, she uses M.A.C. Wipes to remove all her makeup and a touch of Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado around the eye area.

HAIR CARE:

The makeup Pro changes up this product most often because she loves to discover and use different hair care lines almost as much as makeup. Currently, she is in love with the Ever Pure line from L’Oreal. Not only does it keep her color treated hair in tip top shape, it is full of more natural ingredients, which is better for the environment and our body!

The makeup Pro also uses the following styling products on her naturally curly hair: John Freida Frizz-Ease Original Serum, Straight Fixation and Dream Curls Curl Perfecting Spray. L’Oreal Vive Pro Glossy Style Non-Aerosol Hairspray, which provides great hold and shape!

The marketing Pro colors her brunette locks and to maintain that healthy chocolate color, she uses Pantene Pro-V Brunette Expressions shampoo and conditioner. When she wants to blow-dry the curl out of her hair, she uses the best blow dryer ever, the Revlon 1875 Ionic Ceramic Blow Dryer and Redken Satinwear 02 blow-dry lotion. When the hairstyle demands hairspray, her fave is a tried and true brand: AquaNet Extra Super Hold (flash back to the 80’s – she’s with the band man!).

PERSONAL CARE:

The makeup Pro likes to keep it simple when it comes to body lotions because she doesn’t like heavy fragrances competing with her favorite perfumes. Johnson and Johnson Baby Lotion (the one in the pink bottle) is wonderful and keeps this Pro’s skin feeling soft and smooth! Neutrogena Body Wash and Gentle Exfoliating Cream work wonders on dry skin and invigorates her senses after a long day on set! LAVANILA Laboratories, The Healthy Deodorant, in Vanilla Coconut (also because it doesn’t compete with the makeup Pro’s fragrance) is a natural choice to traditional anitperspirants and it works!

The marketing Pro, unlike the makeup Pro, doesn’t mind a light scent in her body lotion and she loves Jaqua’s Pina Colada Body Butter. A must have for the shower is Skintimate Shave Gel for legs and bikini area.

MAKEUP:

The makeup Pro is opening up her personal makeup drawer to our readers! There are staples in her collection that never change (foundation, face powder, eye shadow palettes, mascara) however, frequently she will replace and try new products such as lipgloss, blusher, bronzer, eye liner and lip pencils. Here is a list of the current products that she uses daily:

Primer: M.A.C., Prep & Prime Foundation: Eve Pearl High Definition Dual Foundation/Medium & Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Sand and Nude (she mixes these colors together to achieve the perfect skintone match) Concealer: Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer/Medium Brow: tarte comsetic’s emphasEYES/Taupe & Medium Brown Face Powder: Purely Cosmetics Diamond Powder Palettes: Tricia Sawyer Beauty's Essential Palette & Essential Pretty Palette, Eve Pearl The Eye Palette in Ultimate & Natural Blusher: Eve Pearl Blush Trio in Sassy Bronzer: CoverFX Bronzer in Gold Eye Liner: M.A.,C., Liquidlast Liner in Coco Bar Mascara: CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara in Black Noir, Diorshow Mascara in Black Lips: La Mer Lip Balm, tarte comsetic’s Vitamin-Infused Lipgloss in Liquid Sunshine & OM, Laura Mercier Lipgloss in Bare Beige and Blush, The Eve Pearl Lip Pencil in Caramel, Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in Rose Satin 657 and Linen Beige 317 Remover: M.A.C Wipes.

PRO TIPS AND TRICKS:

To save money, the Pro’s recommend shopping for personal care, hair care and some cosmetic products, like mascara and lip gloss, at your local drug store, but when it comes to skin care and makeup such as foundation, concealer or powder, splurge on high-end manufacturers to insure that your skin is receiving the best quality plus those product lines tend to last longer throughout the day!

It's the Balm!!

Did you know that the first lip balm was made from earwax? YUCK! Totally gross considering how often we lick our lips during the day! Our lips are so abused during the year – wind chapped, sun burned, dehydrated, bitten and injected, it’s no wonder our lips are aching for some TLC! With all this crazy winter, then spring, then winter again weather, I thought it appropriate to post about some of the best lip balms available to consumers, but first you need to know the basics…

Lip Balms are treatments and usually contain beeswax, petroleum jelly, menthol, oils and some can contain sunscreens, vitamins or salicylic acid or aspirin. They are made to seal moisture into your lips and protect them from the external elements and exposure to extreme weather. Dry air, wind and cold temperatures can dry out the lips and draw moisture away from the skin. We use lotion to cure dry, flakey, itchy skin on our body so we should use lip balms in the same manner.

Lipsticks and glosses are cosmetics that have properties unlike a lip balm. Some manufacturers are now producing lipsticks and glosses that include vitamins and sunscreen as well as “plumping” ingredients, but having a good lip balm in your arsenal will be a blessing in disguise.

Your lips are the thinnest layer of skin on your entire body and they don’t have oil glands, which means they need to keep hydrated. Drinking plenty of water during the day will help prevent your lips and skin from feeling dry, but investing in a lip balm is a good idea, just in case you are not as diligent with your hydration routine.

In the April 2009 issue of Shape Magazine, Amy Derick, M.D., a dermatologist in Barrington, Illinois says she wants you to stop purchasing lip balms that come in yummy flavors because, “as saliva evaporates from your skin, it removes not only the product, but the moisture from your mouth as well.” In other words, you are dehydrating your lips by licking off that great tasting lip conditioner! Also, think about it for a second – lip balm is a lip treatment, like skincare. Now I ask you, would you eat your skincare if you could? I didn’t think so!

Here is a list of lip balms that this Pro loves and wouldn’t be caught dead without…

Vaseline Lip Therapy Advanced Formula – Real Simple Magazine testers voted this product the “best deep treatment” therapy and we totally agree! It quenches dryness on contact and lasts for hours. Prices may vary, but we have found this product for the bargain-basement price of $1.99! BAM!

Softlips Original Lip Balm – this product contains an SPF 20 and does have a slight scent of vanilla. Keeps lips soft for hours and protects against the sun. At $4 for a two-pack, this is a great bang for your buck!

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 – this is the product this Pro carries in her makeup kit because it relieves chapped or cracked lips, prevents drying and has an SPF 4 sunscreen. No color, no flavor, no scent and Kiehl’s is a trusted name in the industry. $6.50, but worth every penny!

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 – this balm blends reparative oils and waxes together with sugar for delectable and dependable moisture with maximum sun protection. This is a great product that will give your lips the feeling of smoothness with no waxy build up. $22.50 is pricey, but this product will last you through an entire season.

La Mer The Lip Balm – hail the queen of all lip balms! Now, hold on to your Prada handbags ladies because this is going to run you a cool $45 bucks. Yikes, but aren’t your lips worth it? It is a very rich treatment that shares the same secret ingredients found in La Mer’s face cream! It is a perfect base for under lipstick and it will last you for months!

Just remember this: if your skincare is the Lone Ranger, then your lip balm is Tonto! Don’t forget that you only need to apply or reapply your lip balm 3 times a day to trap all the moisture your lips will need!

TIPS AND TRIX:
You should exfoliate your lips regularly by gently rubbing the damp bristles of a soft toothbrush across your lips each day. Apply lip balm, lip liner and then either your lipstick or lipgloss. You will be amazed at how wonderful your lips will feel!
